Hoppers are the most common variety of Beetleworx. As their name implies, they hop around Wasteland on patrol for Mickey Mouse. Hoppers are one legged machines that have buzz-saws implanted on their heads. Their toon armor is usually modeled after various birds.

Variants[]

The Hoppers are often modeled after various birds from Disney media, in the first game they include:

Seagulls in Mickeyjunk Mountain modeled after the ones from The Simple Things, notable for being the last traditional Mickey short.

Robotic ones in Tomorrow City that are loosely based parts from the Pre-2019 Tomorrow Land sign for the torso, and the Astral Orbiter ride from the head

Vultures in both the Jungle area of Pirates of the Wasteland and the Lonesome Manor, modeled after one of the vultures from The Jungle Book. Their appearance in the latter area could alluded to the ones from Snow White.

In the sequel, several more versions of the Hoppers are introduced:

An owl in Bog Easy based off Friend Owl from Bambi (or the Owl from The Old Mill), likely because an owl matches the spooky nature of Bog Easy.

Toy Soldiers in the Clocktower Diorama in the Train Tunnels modeled after the ones from "It's A Small World".

Horned Devils in the Floatyard modeled after the ones from Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

An unused version that is a cartoony blue bird, found in the prototype banks of Epic Mickey 2, as well as the credits of said game.

Strategies[]

Hoppers will peck at Mickey if he gets too close, dealing some knockback but no damage. Paint is of little use against them - it can only slow them down a bit. In order to defeat Hoppers, first use Thinner to melt away their shell. This exposes the saw blade embedded in the Hopper's head, making its attacks deal 1 pip of damage instead of knockback. They also attack much faster, making them deceptively dangerous. After a few attacks, however, the Hopper will retreat to recover its Paint shell. Destroying the Hopper is as simple as using the spin attack to hit the exposed green weak point before this happens.

If your spin misses the weak point because you attacked the Hopper from the back, or if the Hopper still has its paint shell, the Hopper will be sent flying backwards, not unlike a Seer. An alternative way to deal with Hoppers is to use this repeatedly to steer them into thinner pools or off of cliffs. You can also use this property of Hoppers to deal collateral damage, knocking over/stunning other enemies. In Epic Mickey, a Hopper in knockback will even shatter a Gremlin Cage - but it is borderline impossible to do this to any cage other than that of Gremlin Apollo in Tomorrow Square.

Trivia[]

  • In the files, Hoppers are called "AnimatronicFodder", similar to Seers who are called "BlotlingFodder". This is because they're the weakest enemies of their respective categories.
  • Hoppers are the only Beetleworx type to appear in Mickeyjunk Mountain.
